Many of us might associate bucket hats with Oasis vs Blur, festivals, and ladettes knocking back cans of Red Stripe, but they’ve now made their way to haute couture by being featured on the catwalks of New York Fashion Week.
American fashion designer Anna Sui featured ‘quarantine crafts’ for her SS21 show in the Big Apple, including some wildly fun crochet bucket hats featuring cans of sparkling water Spindrift, which became the highlight of the designer’s presentation.
Our first thoughts were ‘did she crochet these herself?’, and ‘where can we get one?!’
To answer the first question, no. The hats were commissioned by an Etsy shop based in Midwestern US state Wisconsin, who makes a wide range of the beverage featuring crochet bucket hats, so there’s bound to be one with a drink that suits you if you’re not into American beers or hard seltzers.
Anna Sui admitted to Vogue that she’s never previously cooked in her life until the pandemic forced her to quarantine at home in New York, and she began to teach herself, as well as some other lockdown crafting skills, which inspired her SS21 show.
It will be interesting to see how these hats go on to inspire the world of fashion design for next years spring and summer collections, and it truly showed how accessories can make any outfit stand out, as well as how shopping small and learning crafts is always a good idea!
